Thanks to the Four County Community Foundation for supporting our students with materials for this Geometric Design and Scaling Project!
The students really became involved in designing and implementing their circle designs. They took to this project and were very excited to be able to apply the properties of circles that we learned during class to their original designs they created. They were tasked with creating an original design on paper using only a compass and straightedge. Once the designs were created, the students then had to decide how to scale their design up to create a copy of their designs on the school lawn. The students also had to come up with a plan to reproduce these designs onto the lawn. This included brainstorming the best way to create a compass and straightedge large enough to draw ten to twenty foot designs on the lawn. The students soon came up with the idea to use dowel rods and string to create the circles and straight lines they would need to reproduce the designs. Armed with a plan, they were off to create art on the lawn.
