Our 5th graders shopped for books to take home and read over the summer to avoid the "Summer Slide." As little as 20 minutes of reading a day will help maintain the reading skills they have worked so hard to achieve over the school year. Over two months of learning can be lost over a single summer and it's cumulative from year to year.
